People are justifiably terrified that the disease might be at the convenience store down the block or in their parents’ nursing home. Under these conditions, a lack of information sows rumor mills and panic. When more information is released, people at least have the opportunity to put the dangers — or lack thereof — into proper perspective. The city and county, however, have opted to provide the absolute minimum amount of information they can, the Post-Dispatch’s Janelle O’Dea and Blythe Bernhard report. The public gets a daily tally — just the bare numbers with no additional context. St. Louis County does provide 10-year age ranges of patients who have tested positive, but it doesn’t even release the name of the municipality where cases are confirmed. All other information that gets reported publicly comes from journalists collecting it independently. “In order for people, of their own initiative, to act responsibly, they do have to be informed,” says Dave Roland, a Missouri attorney and transparency advocate. The idea isn’t to create panic but rather to ensure that people who might have crossed paths with an infected person can make informed decisions. Releasing more information serves to protect the public and helps reduce the risk of spreading the virus.”
