No I didn’t see the movie Harriet and I don’t plan on seeing it. I don’t turn to Hollywood or Tyler Perry Studios for adaptions of our stories. I study, read, research, get it unfiltered, straight no chaser. Who tells our stories matters as evidenced by all the fictional characters in the movie. Who plays us matters as evidenced by the controversy surrounding the film’s star British actress Cynthia Erivo… But here’s the thing fam, the studios, directors, actors & actresses you’re trying to appeal to/shame don’t care. They’re not trying to present an accurate rendition of our stories, they’re just trying to make a movie that makes money and/or wins an award. The way we stop this isn’t by crying foul time and time and time again. Its by telling our own stories, supporting independent black media and filmmakers who align with our standards instead of wasting time and energy on those who don’t. Create the alternative and stop expecting those outside our community who exploit our imagery to give a damn about exploiting our imagery.
We can’t have what we won’t build.
