“COVID-19 is spreading horribly because of cross contamination. It is affecting black people the most because we are the permanent underclass in this country.
The grocery store workers at Whole Foods… The Uber drivers that picked up the white and affluent from the airports… The nurses and aides that were patrolling the hospitals… All the labor intensive and low paying professions that were exposed to a new virus that was brought here by affluent whites.
The same way that smallpox was spread to indigenous natives is the same thing that is happening today. Although they were relatively healthy, they were introduced to a dangerous viral element that their immune systems could not handle. They had no biological weapon in the form of antibodies to fight it off and it took them out by the millions.
This is the same thing that is happening to us… Except that as a community we aren’t even relatively healthy. Our immune systems have been compromised due to environmental racism that leaves us disproportionately affected by asthma, lung cancer, and respiratory illnesses. Food deserts that escalate diabetes. Stress and PTSD from systematic racism that aggrevates pulmonary hypertension. And now our bodies, which already have compromised immune systems, are being introduced to another dangerous viral element that we also don’t have the necessary antibodies to fight.
It will get worse for us as a people. The 240,000 that they expect to die is not even the tip of the iceberg and it will be the black masses who will make up most of the dead because we have no safety nets in place to stop it.
If you’ve never cared about political organizing before now… You better begin to think long and hard about how to do so because it’s time to put in the work so that we can try to alleviate the suffering that is coming soon.
This is not a conspiracy theory post. All the regions that are keeping data are showing that black folks mortality rate against COVID-19 is unusually high, so it’s safe to presume off the current numbers that most of the future deaths from it will also be black folks.” – Jamilah Horton
